Fine Oil By Dutch Artist Anton Rutgers 1898 -1954 'Windmills By The Canal'
We are please to continue to offer Dutch early/mid 20th century works an area that must only be a good future investment. This is a fine mid 20th century oil on canvas by Dutch highly regarded artist Anton Rutgers (1898-1954). Rutgers work is highly collected as it does not come onto the market often this being only the second we have had in the last 5 years and commands good prices at auction. The painting is based arrange a canal scene with a windmill, boat to the foreground and a further windmill in the background. The painting with is in good condition other than 2 small areas of paint loss as shown in photo 6 and contained in a moulded gilt frame measures 23x 18 cm unframed and 33 x 27 cm framed. The sale price reflects the damage.
The rear of the frame contains a sticker for the famous 'Pietec Breughel' gallery in Amsterdam who originally would have retailed the painting as they did with most of Rutners works. What is very rare is that the original purchase invoice dated 25/08/1952 is also present with the painting. See photo 3. This would sugest the work was painted arround 1950 in Rutners last few years.
The Pietec Breughel gallery is still trading today in Amsterdam and still promote exhibitions of current and 20th century Dutch artist.
